For example, in Exchange, API might refer to the API specification, documentation, and catalog. In API Designer, API might refer to the API specification. In API Catalog, API might refer to the API instance, policies, and contracts.

API aspects

Parts of an API. Examples of API aspects include specifications, instances, catalog information, and documentation.

API catalog information

Properties related to an API’s entry in an API catalog, such as name, version, owner (contact), tags and categories. In Anypoint Exchange, these properties are associated with APIs in asset portal information.

API conformance

API conformance indicates whether a validated API specification passes all of the required rules in one or more governance rulesets. If an API specification is included in multiple governance profiles, it must pass all of the rulesets in all of those profiles to be conformant.

API documentation

Helps consumers understand and use the API, with content such as examples, use cases, and tutorials.

API implementation

A realization of the API specification to make the API functional.

API instance

An instantiation of the API implementation. An API can have multiple instances across different environments and gateways, which can be used by clients to make API calls. Instances that are configured but not deployed are also captured as part of this aspect.

An instance can be either a proxy of an API that serves the upstream or an application endpoint.

API specification

Details the functional and expected behavior of an API, as well as the fundamental design philosophy and supported data types. It contains both documentation and API definitions to create a contract that people and software can read.

API Governance

Part of Anypoint Platform that enables you to apply governance rules to your APIs and monitor conformance to those rules.

API Manager

Part of Anypoint Platform that enables you to manage, govern, and secure your APIs.

API Portal

An access point where you can present an API to attract users.

API proxy

A feature of Anypoint API Manager that supplies a layer of protection against attacks on MuleSoft APIs. Manage APIs with the UI instead of having to write code. Formerly called API Gateway.

APIkit

APIkit is a tool for building Mule REST or SOAP APIs. Formerly called SOAPkit.

application network

A network that connects applications, data, and devices through APIs. The network allows consumers from other parts of the business to discover and use assets.

C

CloudHub

Integration platform as a service that lets you manage applications in the cloud. When deploying an application to the cloud through the Runtime Manager console, CloudHub is used in the background.

clustering

Using a set of Mule instances that act as, and can be managed as, a unit. A cluster is a virtual server composed of multiple nodes. You can manage cluster instances from the cloud.

component
  1. In Anypoint Platform, a POJO, Spring bean, Java bean, or a script such as Groovy, Ruby, Python, or JavaScript that contains the business logic for processing messages passing through Mule. These components typically take the whole message - or just the payload - as input. They return an object that becomes the message payload for the next element in the message processor chain.

  2. Generically, an architecturally specific portion of a software package.

configuration builder

A class that parses a configuration file. The default configuration builder is the org.mule.config.MuleXmlConfigurationBuilder class, which parses a Mule XML configuration file.

connector

A self-contained component that allows you to integrate Mule applications with the APIs of other, external applications, such as Salesforce, CMIS, and Twitter. A set of connectors is included in Mule 4. Other connectors created by MuleSoft or third parties are available on Anypoint Exchange.

The DataWeave Language queries and transforms data for integrations.

E

Edge

Anypoint Security feature to help you manage edge security.

F

flow

Within a Mule application, a flow is a block of executable components, including any connector operations, that Mule runtime executes sequentially on a Mule event. A flow can also contain an event source, which triggers the creation of the event and the execution of the flow.

G

governed APIs

APIs are governed if they are identified by the selection criteria of at least one of the governance profiles. If an API is governed, all versions of that API are considered one governed API. Subscription limits are set based on your organization’s purchased capacity and the UI gives information about usage and alerts when you are nearing or exceeding your subscription capacity.

governance profiles

A governance profile applies selected governance rulesets to a filtered group of APIs. API Governance then validates the APIs against the rulesets to determine governance conformance.

H

hybrid deployment

Deploying a Mule Application via the cloud console of the Anypoint Runtime Manager to an on-premises server that hosts Mule runtime engine. This deployment is hybrid in the sense that the hosting of your application is on-premises, while application management is in the cloud.

M

message filter

A message processor that controls whether a message is processed by a filter.

message processor

A basic building block used to construct flows. A message processor controls how messages are sent and received within a flow.

message receiver

A Java class used by a connector to read the incoming data, package it as a message, and pass it to a service component’s inbound router. The message receiver can use a transformer if necessary to convert the data.

mocking service

Provides a public URI to test or explore an API.

module
