Audit Logs

The Audit Log feature allows you to access and search management console logs. By default, the console stores logs in an embedded database and include the following events:

  • Users and User group creation

  • Group Permission changes

  • Successful User Authentications

  • Server registration

  • Application deployments

  • Warnings and error conditions

Accessing the Audit Log

Starting from the blue management console tool bar, select Administration, then select Audit Log from the Utility Group in the pane on the left (below).

By default, the Audit Log pane displays the current day’s log entries, with the most recent entries listed on top. To display just the log entries pertaining to specific users, servers, or events, you can apply the following filters:

  • date

  • type of message

  • text field

Filtering the Audit Log

Sorting by date

In the Occurring After field, type a date in YYYY-MM-DD format, or click the calendar icon to the right of the field. After the pop up calendar appears, click a date to select it.

Note that he Audit Log shows logs entries from the selected day onward (not from the selected day only).

After selecting the date, click Search.

Click the Reset button at any time to return to the default Audit Log display.

After you specify a range of dates, all subsequent filters affect only those log entries that fall within the selected range of dates.

Sorting by log entry type

Click the Type field to select the log entry levels to display. The available options include All (default), Info, Error and Warning.

Sorting by text

Type a string in the Text Contains field to display only those log entries containing the specified string. This search is not case sensitive. By default, only log entries matching whole words are included in the results. To search for part of a word, enclose the string within asterisks (*). For example, *admin* returns all words containing the string admin.

You may also use asterisks to determine whether the desired string occurs at the beginning or end of a word. For example, to search for admin but not admingroup, search for *admin.

Audit Log defines a “whole word” as a string surrounded by spaces or by special delimiting characters such as period (.), slash (/), parentheses (()) or underscore (). So, for example, a search for the string admin returns entries containing the whole word admin (separated by spaces), as well as entries containing the string admin separated by special characters, such as (admin) or _admin (which would include, for example, EXECUTE_ADMIN_SCRIPTS). The results will not include entries containing the word Administrator, because that string does not contain admin delimited by one of these special characters.

After typing the desired search string, click Search to display the results.

Example

Suppose the logs include entries with three objects that each contain the string test: testuser, Testgroup and test_deployment. When you enter the filter string test, the following strings are returned (highlighted, below).

These case-insensitive results include items containing the whole word test. In this example, test is delimited by a slash, an underscore, then a space and a period (last two entries).

Also, notice that the filter returned the string test but not Testgroup, because for this last term, the string test is not followed by a qualifying delimiter.

When we change the filter string to test, the console returns the following results:

This time, the console returns all log entries that contain test as a whole word, or as part of a word. Note that this set of results includes entries containing both testuser and Testgroup, neither of which appeared among the results for the first search, which used the filter string test.

Our next filter string (*test) returns the results below:

The above search results show entries containing words that end with test. In the first and last two entries, the words are delimited by an underscore (test_deployment) or a period (Test). The menu entries containing Testgroup are included only because they also happen to contain Test at the end of the entry (yellow highlights, above).

Changing the filter string to test* produces the following results:

These results contain all entries containing test at the beginning of a word, including, for example, all entries containing Testgroup.

Limiting Results Displayed

The Max Results field can limit the number of entries shown. Available options are 10, 25, 50 (default), 100 and 200.
